Source

EECA / EVRoam (NZ government open EV charger data platform). NZ Public EV Chargers register, full unit-level. Export ≈ January 2026 (latest DateFirstOperational in dataset = 2026-01-22; explicit export-date metadata absent from file).

Scope

  • 2,050 rows × 16 columns = NZ public EV charger units (full register, including private/destination)
  • 617 unique SiteIds; site-to-unit ratio ≈ 3.3
  • Years covered: DateFirstOperational 2015 → 2026-01-22
  • Power range: 7 kW (slow AC) to 350+ kW (ultra-fast DC); total 170.71 MW installed
  • Geographic coverage: all 16 NZ regions; district-level granularity intact (vs RD_009 where District column was empty)
  • Companion datasets: RD_009 (co-funded subset), RD_011 (district rollup), RD_012 (region rollup), URL_006 (portal description)

Relevance to NI and thesis

NI (mobility-skill calibration):

  • Tasman district 31 units / 2.2 MW (key_claim 12) feeds the NI mobility skill’s “what already exists” baseline at unit granularity within ~50 km of pilot
  • Per-BEV public-kW provision 1.33 kW/BEV national (key_claim 8) sets a defensible sizing target for community-charger proposals
  • Operator regional dominance (key_claim 10) identifies whose system to interoperate with (Meridian dominant in NMT 50%; ChargeNet 38%)
  • Kohatu + Murchison corridor-site discoveries (key_claim 9, 12) means community-charger proposals must position relative to nearby incumbent capacity

Thesis (NZ energy-system structure):

  • DC dominance (key_claim 3) — empirical structural difference from Europe with V2H/V2G implications
  • Top-3-region concentration 58% (key_claim 8) + site density per 1000 km² (key_claim 11) — rural-urban inequality quantified
  • Operator regional dominance (key_claim 10) — Meridian SI / ChargeNet Auckland / Z highway-corridor flagships = empirical operator-territory pattern
  • Co-funded vs private layer (key_claim 6) — 4.6× capacity multiplier shows state subsidy seeded; private commercial buildout layered

Research targets

Research gaps

  • RT_143 (low) — IEA “chargers” granularity reconciliation. Confirm with IEA what “1,470 NZ public chargers 2025” in RD_006 counts vs RD_010’s 617 sites or 2,050 units. Likely “charge points” sit between, but the EVRoam-to-IEA reporting mapping is undocumented.
  • RT_144 (low) — EECA/EVRoam Locality column normalisation + geocoding cleanup. Z Waiouru is coded as “New Plymouth” (Waiouru is in Manawatu-Whanganui); Z Turangi as “Masterton” (Turangi is in Waikato). Sub-district granularity also limited by buckets like “Other rural Tasman District”. Direct EECA portal cleanup would close.
  • RT_145 (medium) — NZ per-BEV public-kW provision international benchmark. The 1.33 kW per NZ BEV figure needs international context (Norway, Netherlands, US, etc.) to interpret — under- or over-provisioned vs comparable EV-mature markets. OT_024 may have figures; otherwise IEA EV Outlook annexes.
