Source

EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority). EV Metrics by NZ Region — region-level rollup. Export likely Q3/Q4 2025 (inferred from systematic BEV + CP deltas vs the more-recent RD_011 ~Jan 2026 snapshot; explicit export-date metadata absent from file).

Scope

  • 15 rows × 12 columns = NZ regions per Stats NZ taxonomy (Tasman + Nelson merged into ‘Nelson-Tasman’; Chatham Islands excluded)
  • Columns: Region, Charge Points, Units, Sites, Battery Electric Vehicles, Total Vehicles, Population Estimate, Total KW Charging, BEVs per Charge Point, KW Charging per BEV, BEV Penetration, BEVs per Capita
  • Vintage: ~Q3/Q4 2025 (earlier than RD_011)
  • Aggregation: charger inventory from EECA EVRoam unit register (earlier than RD_010 snapshot); BEV registrations from MoT/NZTA; population from Stats NZ
  • Companion datasets: RD_011 (later snapshot, district rollup), RD_010 (later unit-level register), RD_006 (IEA country aggregate cross-check)

Relevance to NI and thesis

NI (regional context + growth-rate calibration):

  • Nelson-Tasman combined-region row (key_claim 7) anchors any NI calc that treats NMT as a single governance unit
  • Vintage diff RD_012→RD_011 (key_claim 3) gives the empirical NZ BEV growth rate ~8% per quarter ≈ ~30% annualised — useful as a calibration for NI forward-projection logic
  • Regional charger-supply pattern (key_claim 6) — Nelson-Tasman is the 3rd most charger-starved region nationally even at this earlier vintage

Thesis (regional inequality + growth trajectory):

  • Top 3 regions = 74.5% of national BEV stock (key_claim 4) — empirical Auckland-Christchurch-Wellington concentration
  • Top-of-South-Island corridor pattern (key_claim 8) — NMT middling, Marlborough trailing, West Coast bottom = empirical sub-Canterbury inequality
  • Vintage growth pattern (key_claim 3) — supports the “NZ is catching up but unevenly” framing for the thesis EV chapter

Research targets

Research gaps

  • RT_148 (low) — Confirm RD_012 export date with EECA portal. The systematic 6-12% BEV deltas vs RD_011 indicate ~3-4 month gap, but explicit labelling on the file would close the assumption. EECA EVRoam portal metadata or direct enquiry.
  • RT_146 (medium, captured by RD_011) — Multi-snapshot district/region time series for trajectory analysis still applies here; combining RD_011 + RD_012 gives two snapshots but a proper monitoring series is needed
  • RT_147 (low, captured by RD_011) — BEV count source/definition confirmation also applies here
