Summary
This Stats NZ / Ministry for the Environment land-use dataset gives New Zealand agricultural and horticultural land area by farm type. It is retrieved as the denominator for the model’s crude grazing and horticulture diesel derivation: the national off-road diesel volumes by sub-sector (OT_126) divided by these areas gives an approximate L/ha. The areas are 2016-census farm-extent classifications (the whole-farm area of each farm type, not the cropped area), so the derived intensities are order-of-magnitude coefficients.

- Denominator for the crude per-ha diesel derivation (grazing and horticulture legs). Using OT_126 off-road diesel volumes: sheep and beef 108 M L / 8.5 M ha = ~13 L/ha; dairy 95 M L / 2.6 M ha extent = ~37 L/ha (or ~56 using the RD_036 effective 1.70 M ha); horticulture 18 M L / ~0.19 M ha (fruit + veg) = ~94 L/ha. ⚠ Crude: EECA’s on-farm dairy and sheep-and-beef buckets exclude contractor fieldwork diesel (which sits in the arable + contractors bucket), so the derivation understates grazing and overstates arable, hence arable is taken from FAR direct (OT_215) instead.
