Residential Baseline Study 2.0 — Power Demand by Time of Use

NZ hourly demand by end-use, GREEN-Grid-rooted — settles the 3-slice evening-peak contest and resolves the heating-stripped profile (RT_226)

The RBS2.0 “Enhancement 1” output workbook (EnergyConsult, 2022) giving residential hourly electricity demand by end-use, by season × weekday/weekend × year (2000–2040), for NZ + 8 Australian regions. The NZ profiles are built from the University of Otago/EECA GREEN Grid study (2014–2018) — the same NZ-measured root as RD_019, NOT the Australian load data. Yields the NZ 3-slice demand-shape (total + heating-stripped) the engine needs. data_quality: verified.

Summary

The “Power Demand by Time of Use” data workbook produced for the RBS2.0 update (completed 2022) — a 801k-row long-format table (Demand.Data: Region, Season, DayType, End Use Category, Year, Hour, Power) of typical residential hourly demand and gross generation, behind-the-meter, for nine regions (New Zealand + the eight Australian states/territories), 2000–2040. The New Zealand profiles are derived from the University of Otago/EECA GREEN Grid Household Electricity Demand Study 2014–2018; the Australian profiles from Solar Analytics, Sustainability Victoria, CSIRO and AEMO. For Neobiome it supplies the NZ within-day demand shape split by end-use — directly the engine’s demand_distribution 3-slice input, including a heating-stripped variant for elec_nonheat.

Key claims

- claim: "RBS2.0 'Power Demand by Time of Use' (EnergyConsult, completed 2022) gives typical residential hourly demand (behind-the-meter) and gross PV generation by end-use category (Cooking, IT&HE, Lighting, Other Equipment, Space conditioning, Transport, Water heating, White goods, Generation), by season (Summer/Autumn/Winter/Spring) × day type (weekday/weekend) × year 2000–2040, for 9 regions (NZ + 8 AU states). NZ profiles are derived from the University of Otago/EECA GREEN Grid Household Electricity Demand Study 2014–2018 — the same NZ-measured root as RD_019."
source_location: "'Description' sheet (Overview, Definitions, Data Sources NZ); 'Demand.Data' (801,217 rows, 7 cols)"
- claim: "NZ 2021 total-electricity 3-slice fractions (solar_day 09–15 / evening_peak 17–21 / night_base remaining 14 h): all-season weekday 0.207 / 0.275 / 0.518; winter weekday 0.180 / 0.309 / 0.511 (winter evening peak sharpest); summer weekday 0.237 / 0.243 / 0.519. Weekends flatten the peak and lift solar_day (e.g. summer weekend 0.310 / 0.219 / 0.471)."
  source_location: "Computed from 'Demand.Data' filtered Region=NZ, Year=2021, all demand end-uses (Generation excluded)"
- claim: "NZ 2021 HEATING-STRIPPED 3-slice fractions (Space conditioning + Water heating excluded — the appliance-only shape the engine's elec_nonheat needs): all-season weekday 0.224 / 0.282 / 0.494; winter weekday 0.214 / 0.313 / 0.473. This is the heating-stripped diurnal profile that RT_226 sought and that RD_019's published period-averages did not provide."
  source_location: "Computed from 'Demand.Data' Region=NZ, Year=2021, excluding Space conditioning + Water heating"
- claim: "Independent corroboration of the contested NZ evening-peak fraction: this RBS processing of the GREEN Grid data puts the NZ weekday evening-peak share at ~0.275 (annual) / ~0.31 (winter) — agreeing with RD_019 and CR_020 (~0.26–0.27) and against CR_019's 0.38. ⚠ It shares the GREEN Grid root with RD_019, so it is an independent PROCESSING, not a fully independent measurement."
  source_location: "Computed NZ 2021 fractions vs CR_019 (0.22/0.38/0.40) / CR_020 (0.23/0.26/0.51) / RD_019 (~0.23/0.27/0.50)"
- claim: "Limitations (per the workbook's own 'Description' sheet): the profiles are STATIC — based on demand-profile research over 2012–2020; projected future-year profiles reflect changes in appliance stock / total energy but NOT changes in consumer behaviour. Results are 'typical demand', not maximum or minimum. The NZ end-use disaggregation of the GREEN Grid totals may rely in part on Australian profiling factors (Sustainability Victoria whole-of-home tool)."

Neobiome Intelligence relevance

This is the NZ within-day demand shape the engine’s demand_distribution (3-slice) needs, and unlike the appliance energy figures (AU-borrowed per OT_072) the NZ shape here is GREEN-Grid-rooted — NZ-measured. Three concrete contributions: (1) it settles the contested evening peak — the workbook has carried rival shapes from CR_019 (peak 0.38) and CR_020 (peak ~0.26); this independent RBS processing of GREEN Grid lands at 0.275 (winter 0.31), corroborating CR_020/RD_019 and refuting CR_019’s 0.38. (2) It resolves RT_226 — the heating-stripped (appliance-only) diurnal profile (≈ 0.22 / 0.28 / 0.49 weekday) that elec_nonheat requires and that RD_019’s published tables left open. (3) The per-end-use ToU profiles are the spine for the optional bottom-up appliance demand build (a default NZ all-electric set scaled by demand_level). ⚠ Caveats: it shares the GREEN Grid root with RD_019 (independent processing, not independent data); profiles are “static” (2012–2020 research, no behaviour-change in projections); and the NZ end-use split may lean partly on AU profiling factors.

Research targets

Research gaps

  • RT_226 (RESOLVED → RD_021): the NZ heating-stripped (appliance-only) diurnal profile is now available (weekday ≈ 0.22/0.28/0.49) — derived by excluding Space conditioning + Water heating from the RBS NZ end-use ToU decomposition. ⚠ End-use disaggregation may rely partly on AU profiling factors.
  • Demand-shape cluster (RT_224/225/221/227): RD_021 corroborates the CR_020/RD_019 reading; the GREEN Grid raw microdata (SN-853334, RT_165) remains the only route to a fully NZ-native end-use split.
