GREEN Grid EECA residential electricity demand analysis — Part B + Part C (Anderson et al., Otago, 2019)

Primary measured NZ demand data — small non-random sample

The EECA-commissioned analysis (Centre for Sustainability, University of Otago) of the NZ GREEN Grid 1-minute household electricity dataset — the measured primary behind CR_019 and CR_020. Open Part B (data analysis) + Part C (upscaling) HTML reports held here; the raw microdata is access-restricted (UK Data Service ReShare SN-853334). The 44-household sample was deliberately non-random (selected for “complex” consumption / embedded generation), so it is directional, not nationally representative.

Summary

The authoritative open analysis of New Zealand’s only public 1-minute residential electricity dataset (GREEN Grid, 2014–2018). Part B reports the measured diurnal load curve by period and season; Part C decomposes the evening peak by end-use and sets out upscaling methods. This source provides the measured period-average demand the model’s demand-shape options were triangulated from — and resolves the divergence between them.

Key claims

- claim: "Mean per-dwelling demand by period and season (Table 3.1, kW): WINTER — morning 07:00–09:00 = 0.60, daytime 09:00–17:00 = 0.48, evening peak 17:00–21:00 = 0.94, night 21:00–07:00 = 0.41; SUMMER — 0.41 / 0.33 / 0.44 / 0.24. The winter evening peak (0.94 kW) is the maximum."
  source_location: "Part B, Table 3.1 (mean half-hourly power by period/season)"
- claim: "Computed from Table 3.1, the three-slice energy fractions of daily household electricity (solar_day 09–15 / evening_peak 17–21 / night_base = rest, 14 h) are: winter 0.22 / 0.29 / 0.49, summer 0.26 / 0.23 / 0.51, annual blend ~0.23 / 0.27 / 0.50 — total household load including space + water heating."
  source_location: "derived from Part B Table 3.1 period-averages"
- claim: "Sample: 44 households recruited via EDBs in Taranaki (from May 2014) and Hawke's Bay (from Nov 2014); 1-minute per-circuit power via GridSpy monitors; per-dwelling. Recruitment was NON-RANDOM — households were intentionally selected for 'complex' consumption and embedded generation. Mean annual consumption ~8,000 kWh ≈ 14% above the ~7,000 kWh national average."
  source_location: "Part B §2 (sample), §3.1"
- claim: "Of the winter residential evening peak (17:00–21:00), ~21% is identifiable space heating and ~17% hot water (≈38% heating in total); the remainder is lighting, cooking and other appliances."
  source_location: "Part C peak decomposition"
- claim: "The raw 1-minute microdata is access-restricted (UK Data Service ReShare SN-853334, registration required); the Part B/C analysis reports are openly published (cfsotago.github.io/GREENGridEECA)."
source_location: "Part B front matter / data availability"

Neobiome Intelligence relevance

The measured primary document behind the model’s demand shape — now held, addressing the “facts without an underlying document” gap for the most-cited demand source. The Table 3.1 period-averages firm the three-slice demand shape to ~0.23 / 0.27 / 0.50 (total load), which:

  • Confirms CR_020 (Research A, 0.23 / 0.26 / 0.51) — its 4-hour-window-average method was correct.
  • Refutes CR_019’s 0.38 evening fraction — that conflated the evening peak power (~2× daily mean) with its energy share (~0.27). The evening window holds ~a quarter of daily energy, not 40%.
  • For the model’s elec_nonheat (heating-stripped) frame, removing the ~38% heating from the evening shifts toward ~0.25 / 0.20 / 0.55 (CR_020’s heating-stripped estimate stands).

Caveats: n=44, non-random “complex” sample → directional, not nationally representative; per-dwelling total load (incl. space + water heating); 2014–2015 vintage (pre-heat-pump-boom). Resolves RT_165 (the open Part B/C analysis is held; the gated microdata remains a separate, lower-priority target).

Research targets

Resolves RT_165 (GREEN Grid demand study — open analysis reports retrieved). The access-restricted raw microdata (UK Data Service SN-853334) is not retrieved (registration/EUL required); a heating-stripped diurnal curve from the circuit-level microdata remains RT_226.
