Summary
The ANZECC & ARMCANZ (2000) guidelines are the standard Australia-New Zealand reference for water quality, and §4.3 gives the livestock drinking-water quality trigger values (microbial, salinity, major ions) that NZ regional councils and DairyNZ cite. It supplies the quality side of livestock water - confirming stock and dairy water must be clean/uncontaminated, not greywater - to pair with the consumption volumes in OT_225.
Key claims
- claim: "Livestock drinking water must be of suitable quality: 'Good water quality is essential for successful livestock production. Poor quality water may reduce animal production and impair fertility... Contaminants in drinking water can produce residues in animal products (e.g. meat, milk and eggs), adversely affecting their saleability and/or creating human health risks.' Microbial guideline: 'Drinking water for livestock should contain less than 100 thermotolerant coliforms per 100 mL (median value).' [verified verbatim]"
source_location: "§4.3 Livestock drinking water quality (opening) + §4.3.2.2 (thermotolerant coliforms)."
- claim: "Salinity (total dissolved solids) tolerance of livestock in drinking water - the 'no adverse effects' band (mg/L TDS): dairy cattle 0-2500, poultry 0-2000, beef cattle 0-4000, horses 0-4000, pigs 0-4000, sheep 0-5000. Above these, initial reluctance/scouring, then production loss. [verified verbatim, Table 4.3.1]"
source_location: "§4.3.3.5 Table 4.3.1 'Tolerances of livestock to total dissolved solids (salinity) in drinking water'."Model use
- Resolves RT_409b(i). Confirms livestock drinking water sits on the clean / near-potable side of the water-quality split (not greywater), even though it scores through the Food domain. Pairs with OT_225 (per-head volumes) - OT_225 = how much, OT_229 = what quality.
- Supports the redesign’s domestic-vs-production split: greywater (non-potable, per OT_228 / OT_040) cannot serve stock drinking or dairy-shed use.
Research targets
No new research targets. Resolves RT_409b(i) (stock drinking-water quality). RT_409b(ii) (dairy-shed near-potable) is resolved on REG_033.
