Pure Oil NZ — Oilseed Rape Grower Guide
The source that refutes dismissing oilseed rape as "industrial only" — the processing and market legs of the one complete NZ oil pathway
Verbatim: “a large commercial size oilseed Crush Plant located 20Km South of Christchurch which produces high grade cold pressed oil and meal from New Zealand grown GE Free oilseed rape”, using “a cold pressing process with no chemicals (solvents) or added heat.” The crop is grown “through forward contracts with farmers throughout New Zealand, on both irrigated and non-irrigated properties.” Contract price **
860–900/tonne**. Agronomy: target population **55–65 plants/m²**; nitrogen **150–200 units**. ⚠ **No yield or oil-content figure appears anywhere in the guide.** This source establishes the **processing and market** legs only; the yield legs come from [[lit_095_fasi-2012-osr-sowing-date|LIT_095]]. ⚠ **Content current December 2020** — de-date the860–900/tonne before use.
Summary
A grower-facing guide published by Pure Oil NZ, the operator of a commercial cold-press oilseed crush plant in Canterbury. It describes the processing operation, the contracting model by which the crop is grown, the price paid, and basic agronomic targets for establishing the crop.
Its importance to Neobiome is structural rather than numerical. The corpus’s one complete NZ oil-crop pathway is oilseed rape (LIT_095: 2.4 t seed/ha at 42% oil), and the natural objection is that oilseed rape is an industrial commodity crop irrelevant to a self-sufficient community. This guide refutes that objection on two counts: the NZ processing is cold press with no solvents and no added heat — a method a community could plausibly operate at small scale — and the crop is contracted nationally on both irrigated and non-irrigated properties, so it is not confined to high-input irrigated Canterbury arable. Together with LIT_095 it makes oilseed rape the only NZ oil crop with a defensible production and processing story.

Feeds d02_smart_food_systems as the processing and market legs of the oilseed rape pathway — the legs LIT_095 does not carry.
| Leg | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Seed yield | lit_095_fasi-2012-osr-sowing-date | ✅ 2.4 t/ha (irrigated Lincoln trial, mean of sowing dates) |
| Oil content | lit_095_fasi-2012-osr-sowing-date | ✅ 42% → ~1,008 kg oil/ha in the seed |
| Processing method | OT_183 | ✅ cold press, no solvents, no added heat — community-plausible |
| Market / contracting | OT_183 | ✅ national forward contracts, irrigated and non-irrigated |
| Price | OT_183 | ⚠ $860–900/t, current Dec 2020 — de-date |
| Establishment agronomy | OT_183 | ✅ 55–65 plants/m²; N 150–200 units |
| Recovery fraction | none | 🔴 RT_391 — still empty |
What this settles for the model:
- Oilseed rape is not disqualified as “industrial only”. The NZ commercial route is cold pressing without solvents or heat, which is the same broad method a community-scale press uses. This is a genuine reversal of the intuition that oilseeds imply industrial solvent extraction.
- It is not confined to irrigated land. Contracts run on non-irrigated properties nationally — which partially offsets the fact that LIT_095’s 2.4 t/ha came from an irrigated trial. It does not supply an unirrigated yield, so the offset is qualitative, not quantitative.
- The nitrogen requirement is a regenerative-fit flag. 150–200 units of nitrogen places oilseed rape alongside hemp (100–130 kg N/ha, OT_112) as a higher-input, non-N-fixing crop — a poorer fit with the regenerative-only constraint (D_001) than the N-fixing pulses. That tension should be stated wherever the pathway is proposed.
⚠ Price must be de-dated. $860–900/tonne is December-2020 content. The corpus carries a farm-input escalation index (OT_128) for cost lines, but that is an input-cost index, not an oilseed price series — it is not a valid deflator for this figure, and no substitution has been made here.
No engine cell is auto-changed by this ingest.
Notes
- A verified negative worth keeping: the guide contains no yield and no oil-content figure at all. That is unusual for a grower guide and it is why the pathway needs both LIT_095 and OT_183 rather than either alone.
- Content currency (Dec 2020) differs from the document’s 2022 label — noted on the source itself. Any figure taken from it inherits the December-2020 date, not 2022.
- The regenerative tension is real and should not be smoothed over. The only NZ oil pathway the corpus can carry end-to-end is a crop requiring 150–200 units of nitrogen. Under D_001 that is a live design conflict, not a footnote.
- Industry/company publication —
data_quality: medium. It is authoritative on its own operation (the plant, the contracts, the price it pays) and promotional in tone elsewhere.
Research targets
Documents to retrieve
- (none new) — the recovery-fraction blocker is raised as RT_391 at LIT_095; nothing in this guide would resolve it, since it publishes no extraction yield.
Research gaps
- Not raised as RTs (recorded here instead):
- An unirrigated NZ oilseed rape yield. This guide confirms non-irrigated contracts exist but publishes no yield. Already recorded at LIT_095.
- A current oilseed rape contract price. The $860–900/t is Dec-2020 content and no valid NZ oilseed price deflator is in corpus.
- Small-scale cold-press equipment cost and throughput. Would convert “community-plausible method” into a costed pathway; not yet sourced.
