Hazelnut Growers Association NZ — Bulletin 1
NZ hazelnut yields per hectare, a full climate envelope — and a unit that blocks the oil calculation
Grower-association guidance. Verbatim: “Growers should plan to harvest 1 tonne/ha by year 6 and 2.5 tonnes/ha by year 10.” First crop: “small crop in the third year after planting, with the first commercial harvest in the fourth or fifth year.” Climate envelope: mean annual 12–16°C, minimum −8 to −10°C, chilling 600–1200 h, rainfall 800–1000 mm; out-of-season November/December frosts of −2 to −3°C damage nut clusters. Regions: Canterbury, then Otago, Nelson, Southland, Marlborough; ~400 ha nationally (2007 census). Establishment
8,500/ha** (established shelter, no irrigation) to **25,000/ha (bare land). 🔴 MIS-ATTRIBUTION CAUGHT. The upstream research report cited −13°C dormant / −7°C open catkins to this bulletin. Those figures are not here — they belong to the NZ Tree Crops Association hazel guide (confirmed verbatim there). This bulletin gives −8 to −10°C and −2 to −3°C. ⚠ The Appleby trial’s “over 4 tonnes per hectare” is not transferable — it is stated “based on the spacing used in that trial” and the spacing is never stated.
Summary
Bulletin 1 of the Hazelnut Growers Association of New Zealand: grower-facing guidance covering expected yields by orchard age, the climatic requirements of hazelnuts in New Zealand, the regions where they are grown, and indicative establishment economics. It is the only NZ source in corpus giving hazelnut yields per hectare, which superficially makes hazelnuts look more modellable than olives (OT_180, which publish only per tree).
That impression does not survive contact with the units. The bulletin’s per-hectare yields never declare whether they are in-shell or kernel weight, while the only NZ hazelnut oil content in corpus (LIT_096, 54.6–63.2%) is explicitly kernel-basis. Multiplying an undeclared yield by a kernel-basis oil percentage could overstate the oil output by roughly 2×. That is the unit blocker recorded as RT_393, and it is why hazelnuts sit at ”⚠ blocked” rather than ”✅ modellable”.
Key claims
- claim: "PLANNING YIELDS BY ORCHARD AGE, verbatim: 'Growers should plan to harvest 1 tonne/ha by year 6 and 2.5 tonnes/ha by year 10.' ⚠ The report does not declare whether these are IN-SHELL or KERNEL weights. [verified verbatim against the source; the missing basis is a verified negative]"

- claim: "TIME TO PRODUCTION, verbatim: 'small crop in the third year after planting, with the first commercial harvest in the fourth or fifth year.' [verified verbatim against the source]"

- claim: "⚠ THE APPLEBY TRIAL FIGURE IS NOT TRANSFERABLE. Appleby (Nelson, 1970-75) measured 10.3 kg/tree/yr, described verbatim as 'over 4 tonnes per hectare based on the spacing used in that trial' — 🔴 but THE SPACING IS NEVER STATED, so the 4 t/ha is neither reproducible nor transferable. [verified verbatim against the source; the missing spacing is a verified negative]"

- claim: "NZ CLIMATE ENVELOPE FOR HAZELNUTS: mean annual temperature 12-16°C; minimum -8 to -10°C; chilling requirement 600-1200 hours; rainfall 800-1000 mm. Out-of-season November/December frosts of -2 to -3°C damage nut clusters. [verified verbatim against the source]"

- claim: "🔴 MIS-ATTRIBUTION CAUGHT AT VERIFICATION. The upstream research report cited '-13°C dormant / -7°C open catkins' to this bulletin. Those figures are NOT in this document — they belong to the NZ Tree Crops Association hazel guide (confirmed verbatim there). This bulletin's figures are -8 to -10°C (minimum) and -2 to -3°C (out-of-season frost damage to nut clusters). [verified negative; the correct attribution was confirmed against the other document]"
source_location: "Hazelnut Growers Association NZ, Bulletin 1 — climatic requirements section, searched; the -13°C / -7°C figures do not appear."
- claim: "REGIONS AND SCALE: Canterbury, then Otago, Nelson, Southland, Marlborough; approximately 400 ha nationally (2007 census). ESTABLISHMENT COST: $8,500/ha with established shelter and no irrigation, up to $25,000/ha from bare land. Gross margins $4,000-7,000/ha ⚠ these margin figures are Australia / Oregon / Italy, NOT NZ. [verified verbatim against the source]"

| Term | Value | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Yield, mature | 2.5 t/ha by year 10 (1 t/ha by year 6) | ⚠ in-shell or kernel? not declared |
| Oil content | 54.6–63.2% | kernel basis (lit_096_savage-1998-nz-hazelnut) |
| Crack-out fraction (in-shell → kernel) | UNSOURCED | RT_393 |
| Oil per hectare | not computable | multiplying the two above could overstate ~2× |
| Establishment | 8,500/ha (with shelter) – 25,000/ha (bare land) | NZ, indicative |
| Time to first commercial harvest | year 4–5 (small crop year 3) | NZ |
🔴 Do not multiply 2.5 t/ha by 54.6–63.2%. The yield’s basis is undeclared and the oil percentage is explicitly kernel-basis. Either a crack-out fraction is sourced (RT_393), or the bulletin’s yield basis is established — until then the hazelnut oil figure does not exist.
What is usable now, unblocked:
- The climate envelope (12–16°C mean annual, −8 to −10°C minimum, 600–1200 h chilling, 800–1000 mm rainfall, and the −2 to −3°C spring-frost sensitivity) is directly gateable against the NIWA climate layer already in corpus (RD_022) — a siting screen even without a yield.
- The time-to-bearing profile (year 3 small, year 4–5 first commercial, year 6 at 1 t/ha, year 10 at 2.5 t/ha) is a genuine constraint on a community’s food plan: hazelnuts are a decade-scale investment, unlike the annual oilseed rape pathway (LIT_095).
- The NZ establishment cost band ($8,500–25,000/ha) is one of very few NZ per-hectare establishment figures in the food domain.
⚠ The gross margins ($4,000–7,000/ha) are Australia / Oregon / Italy, not NZ — do not use them as an NZ economic input. No engine cell is auto-changed by this ingest.
Notes
- The mis-attribution is the highest-value finding on this page. The upstream research report’s cold-hardiness figures (−13°C dormant, −7°C open catkins) were attributed to this bulletin and are not in it; they belong to the NZ Tree Crops Association hazel guide, where they were confirmed verbatim. That guide is not in corpus — recorded below as a note rather than a target, since this bulletin’s own envelope (−8 to −10°C) is sufficient for a siting screen.
- Two independent “missing unit” failures in one document. The per-hectare yields do not declare in-shell vs kernel, and the Appleby 4 t/ha does not declare its spacing. Both make otherwise-precise numbers unusable. This is the same failure mode as the olive census’s missing planting density (OT_180) — a pattern worth naming: NZ tree-crop industry publications routinely omit the denominator.
- ~400 ha nationally (2007 census) — a very small industry, and the figure is nearly two decades old.
- Grower-association guidance, no publication date stated on the document —
data_quality: medium.
Research targets
Documents to retrieve
- RT_393 — the nut crack-out fraction (in-shell vs kernel) for NZ hazelnuts, and/or a declaration of the basis on which the bulletin’s t/ha yields are stated. This is the specific unit blocker that stands between the corpus’s existing hazelnut yield and oil-content figures and a defensible kg-oil-per-hectare number.
Research gaps
- Not raised as RTs (recorded here instead):
- The NZ Tree Crops Association hazel guide — the correct home of the −13°C / −7°C cold-hardiness figures. Named here so the attribution is on record; this bulletin’s own −8 to −10°C envelope is adequate for a siting screen, so retrieving it is a precision upgrade, not a blocker.
- The Appleby trial’s spacing. Would make the 4 t/ha figure interpretable, but the trial is 1970-75 and the planning yields (1 / 2.5 t/ha) are the operative figures regardless.
- NZ hazelnut gross margins. The bulletin’s are overseas. Relevant only once the yield basis is settled.
- A current national area figure (the 400 ha is from the 2007 census).
