Lu & Li (2022) — Seasonal hydrogen storage in renewable power grids
Grid-scale modelling — corroborates CR_040's seasonal-storage niche only (NOT off-grid community)
arXiv 2211.11097 (Univ. of Houston). A power-systems optimization study on utility-grid seasonal H₂ storage. Relevance to Neobiome is conceptual, not direct (grid-scale, international).
Summary
A power-systems paper proposing an Annual Scheduling Model (ASM) for energy-hub-coupled renewable power grids with seasonal hydrogen storage (electrolysers + storage + fuel cells). It models intra-season and cross-season hydrogen exchange and, on the IEEE 24-bus test system, finds seasonal hydrogen storage reduces annual operating cost and renewable curtailment — by storing energy in low-load seasons and releasing it in high-load seasons.
Key claims
- claim: "An annual scheduling model for energy-hub-coupled renewable grids shows that SEASONAL hydrogen storage — storing hydrogen energy in low-load seasons and releasing it (via fuel cells) in high-load seasons, i.e. cross-season energy shifting — effectively reduces annual operation cost and renewable curtailment. The value of hydrogen storage in the study is its ability to shift energy across SEASONS (long-duration), which batteries cannot economically cover; demonstrated by numerical simulation on the IEEE 24-bus system. (Grid/utility scale, international/US modelling — not community or off-grid.)"

⚠ Marginal / conceptual only. Grid-scale power-systems modelling (IEEE 24-bus, US), not off-grid community. It corroborates the concept underpinning the hydrogen_storage / CR_040 verdict — that hydrogen storage’s competitive niche is seasonal / long-duration energy shifting, not diurnal firming (where batteries win) — but does not provide community-scale or NZ-specific evidence.
