Overview

Auroville, Southern India — founded 1968 as a “five-decade experiment in land regeneration, biodiversity restoration, alternative building technologies, and alternative governance and economic models.” Founded with a goal of becoming a city of 50,000; current population ~3,000. Founding gap is a central structural tension in all documented analyses. LIT_012

Funded by Indian Central Government (Grant-in-Aid: ~$2M USD in FY2018-19). Economy: manufacturing and services; agriculture is a major industry (~100 small/medium manufacturing units); tourism significant. LIT_012

Key data

  • Food self-sufficiency: Only 15% of food demand met internally despite available arable land; 85% sourced externally. Agriculture stagnating as less economically competitive than other sectors. LIT_012
  • Building: Auroville Earth Institute — Compressed Stabilised Earth Block (CSEB) technology; 13,930 trainees since 1990 (10,136 Indian + 3,794 from 92 countries). LIT_012
  • Solar Kitchen (1997): 1,000 lunches/day; 540 to schools and service centres; 200 to outlying communities. LIT_012
  • Ecosystem restoration: restored portions of Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest through topsoil preservation and rainwater collection. LIT_012

Governance challenges

  • Founding goal (50,000) vs current reality (~3,000) creates ongoing governance tension between initial blueprint and residents’ realities.
  • Governance critique (Jouhki): regional development vision is “top-down”; disagreement between leadership and residents; 2022 tree-cutting became significant conflict.
  • Sense of “us and them” between Auroville and surrounding rural communities despite outreach programs (Village Action Group).
  • Typical ecovillage challenges: ongoing financing, neighbour issues, and infighting — despite 50 years of operation. LIT_012
